S.M.S for 8-14-22

Posted by swolfgram on Aug 14 2022 - 10:28pm

Good evening everyone

Another summer has almost ended.  With school starting up again the lazy summer days come to a close,  for the most part.  Let's still have some fun in the sun while we can.  With day trips and service opportunities in the near future we have some good stuff coming our way.

Monday Meeting
August day outing plan and prep
8-15,  Good Templar Park (Park side), 7p
The plan for this weeks meeting is to plan for next weekends day outing.  A canoe trip up and down the fox river.  As of now we only have 2 scouts signed up for it.  We need a few more people to sign up.  Please go to the website and let us know if you can come.

On that same note please go to the website and sign up for Race into Scouting.  This is a good chance to meet and help out cub scout groups in our area.  It is also a great chance to get your name out to the packs.  Having packs know you by name is always a cool thing.

Conklin tree farm update.
It is with sadness that I have to report our wreath supplier for the past 16 + seasons Conklin tree farms has retired from the business and will no longer be our wreath supplier.  We were notified earlier this week by Mrs.Conklin  We have a few leads on who we will be going with for the 2022 season.  We are still looking but should be ready to go by the end of September.  Trying to find the same quality and sizes that we have been given these past years is the primary goal.  If you would like to make a suggestion please send us a note so we can look into it.

Troop Fundraising Opportunity

Here we go again!  This late summer begins our next round of fundraisers.  We have 3 chances for you to make yourself and the troop some money.  Firstly is our Popcorn fundraiser,  Secondly is our Wreath fundraiser and last but not least we are bringing back our Jerky fundraiser.  This Monday we will be doing a soft launch of all three.

This event is for Scouts of all ages.  For Cub Scouts we will hold our Annual Cub Mobile Races form 10AM-4PM. There are three, 2 hour slots that dens, packs or individual Scouts can register for. Use the plans to make a Cub Mobile. And so very much more to come down the line.

Good evening everyone!

I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear,
Those of mechanics, each one singing his as it should be blithe and strong,
The carpenter singing his as he measures his plank or beam,
The mason singing his as he makes ready for work, or leaves off work,
The boatman singing what belongs to him in his boat, the deckhand singing on the steamboat deck,
The shoemaker singing as he sits on his bench, the hatter singing as he stands,
The wood-cutter’s song, the ploughboy’s on his way in the morning, or at noon intermission or at sundown,
The delicious singing of the mother, or of the young wife at work, or of the girl sewing or washing,
Each singing what belongs to him or her and to none else,
The day what belongs to the day—at night the party of young fellows, robust, friendly,
Singing with open mouths their strong melodious songs.

S.M.S for 9 - 12

Posted by swolfgram on Sep 12 2021 - 9:29pm

Good evening everyone

We will be having a meeting this week (tomorrow), right after our P.L.C  Everything will be at the church so you won't have to go very far to make the next appointment

Monday Meeting P.L.C
St. Mark's Church, 6p
For this month's patrol leader council we will be going over the details for the upcoming September and October events and meetings.  A major goal for us should be trying to get back to planning at least two or three months out in advance.  Before 2020 we were doing excellent job with our calendar planning and up until now the month by month plans have been ok.  We just need to bring it back to where we were prior to shutdown and we will be better off.  This added foresight gives us the tools necessary to make sure that whatever we plan we can accomplish in a reasonable amount of time, with a reasonable amount of effort and in the right direction.  Anyone and everyone is invited to the P.L.C

Special Monday meeting
St. Mark's Church, 7p
This Monday we will be learning about cast iron.  What is cast iron? How do you care for it?? How was it made??? What can you use it for???? Why do we use it?????  Hopefully all of the questions will be answered and you will have a better understanding of what cast iron is and how to care for it.

Committee meeting
St. Mark's Church, 7p
While the boys are learning about cast iron care the troop one committee will be having the monthly committee meeting at the church on the other side of the gym.  This is an open invitation to all parents and family members and leaders associated with our troop. With a number of things coming up here are some of the topics we will be talking about

Recharter - Due now in October
Future camp outs - Caves, Hunters moon, Veterans weekend in batavia
Fundraisers - Possible ideas
Adult leader roles - What is still open
Who, what, when - Where and why

Camp Kane Day - Repost

S.M.S for 9 - 19

Posted by swolfgram on Sep 19 2021 - 9:03pm

Good evening everyone

I wanted to thank everyone that was able to come to Camp Kane for this weekend's event.  Even though we haven't done a flag presentation in a few months the morning and afternoon ceremonies went off without a hitch and all of the reenactors were very impressed by what the boys did. Most of the reenactors that were there yesterday are former military or first responders.  Taking something like a simple flag ceremony and making it special is a big deal these days.

Monday meeting
St. Mark's Church 7p
For this Monday's meeting we will be going over the details for the trip to Maquoketa Caves. I know that this camp-out falls on homecoming weekend.   Although we might have a hard time getting the numbers together, If we can get at least five scouts together we can go.  If not THERE WILL BE A PLAN B.  We WILL be doing something this weekend scouting wise.  It may be a spur of the moment kind of thing, but it will happen. Bring a plan B idea to the meeting just in case.

S.M.S for 9 - 26

Posted by swolfgram on Sep 26 2021 - 9:03pm

Good evening everyone

Thanks to all that came to Cantigny yesterday.  We had fantastic weather and great company.  I know this was a spur of the moment trip that we weren't expecting to take, we did however get a few things done. Another successful outing on the books.  During the hike in the gardens we talked to a man from Elmhurst.  We learned that he was awarded eagle in 1956.  Afterward, during the history tour, I was talking to the guide and it turns out that he is an eagle scout from Naperville.....we seem to be everywhere!

Monday meeting
St. Charles Bowling alley 6p
This Monday to kick off our fall season we will be meeting over at the St. Charles bowling alley. When I talked to the receptionist at the bowling alley on Friday, she told me that the shoe rental for the evening was free and the rounds were 4.00.  I believe we will be getting a few cub scout visitors as well as this will be an open house evening.

The evening will be from 6p - 8p at the alley.  This is of course an everyone is invited event.

Saturday bike ride
I am still trying to acquire some information on this event.  From what I have been able to gather next weekend October the 2nd we have been invited to do a 10 mile bike trip and orienteering course with with Mr. Brown, Vogel, Mrs. Romano, Bradley, Dominic and William.
For anyone who would like to go or if you need the requirements this would be a rather nice Saturday to do it.

I hope to have more information by Monday night.

Troop One Recharter
That time of year has come again when we have to put together our recharder for the next season.  As of right now I am hoping that all of our members will be rejoining us for the 2022 season.  We hope to have this paperwork in by mid October.  If there are any concerns to what recharter fees will be please contact Joyce and she should be able to walk you through the details.  The price for the year has gone up for both adults and youth.  This is a rate hike on the national side and is not something that the troop is imposing.  We are expecting another rate hike from national for the 22 - 23 season as well.

We all know that these are not the best of times and if any of our members need help with the cost of recharder please reach out to us and let us know.

Hunters Moon Camp-out
October 8th - 10th
The past is yours to savor at the Feast of the Hunters’ Moon. At this historic reenactment you can recapture 18th century life at Fort Ouiatenon (we- ott - non) the first fortified European outpost in what is now Indiana.

The Feast of the Hunters’ Moon is a re-creation of the annual fall gathering of the French and Native Americans which took place at Fort Ouiatenon, a fur-trading outpost in the mid – 1700s. It is held annually in early autumn on the banks of the Wabash River, four miles southwest of West Lafayette, Indiana.

S.M.S for 9 - 5

Posted by swolfgram on Sep 5 2021 - 10:46pm

Good evening everyone

With fall finally upon us oui have a lot of new and interesting things coming up.  Every Monday meeting from now until the end of the year, oui will be engaged in different activities. That is of course what oui will be doing in addition to our camp-outs or outings.

Monday Sept. 6 - No Meeting
OUI WILL NOT be holding a meeting this Monday.

Future forecast September 13th meeting - Cast Iron Care
Oui will be converting our plc next week into a special Monday meeting.
Oui will be going over how to properly care for and maintain cast iron.
• What is cast iron and how can can you make it last for a lifetime?
• How do you properly maintain it's condition
• What are the steps to make sure that you're pots, pans or ovens last.

Camp Kane Day -
Langum park, Sep - 19th, 10 - 3p.
As a result of the fantastic job that the boys did this past May, Camp Kane has asked us to assist them in their flag ceremony at this year's September event. The members of the cavalry organization were extremely impressed by how well  the boys executed the flag ceremony this past Spring.  They have specifically requested for for us to present the colors at this years September 18th event.   If you are able to attend, these are considered service hours.  Oui probably can throw in some requirements during the day.  If I am not mistaken Oui have also been allowed by the city to fire off the cannons multiple times during the day.  Even a few more times than last Spring.

Maquoketa Caves Trip -
September 24th - 26th
September is upon us and with it comes our September camp out.  We'll be returning to Maquoketa Caves State Park in Iowa for this month's camp out.  Oui will be staying at the same campground that Oui did the last time.
(Bellevue state park, Nelson unit)
21466 429th Ave, Bellevue, IA 52031
This is always an enjoyable camp-out especially in early fall when the weather is still favorable and not too cold and not too hot.  The details are on the website.  Please sign up and let's go have some fun spelunking this September.
