S.M.S. for 4 - 26

Posted by swolfgram on Apr 26 2020 - 9:15pm

Good evening everyone

I want to think everyone who  participated in the Lincolns Pilgrimage this past weekend. We had fantastic weather, wonderful food and amazing company. The museums and historical locations we were able to go to gave the boys a much needed dose of history and insight.....
Or at least all this would have happened in an alternate timeline.

In our version of reality it was cool, rainy, and gloomy.  There was one little ray of light this past weekend. Seven scouts who needed the 1st aid merit badge where able to participate in our online presentation of the badge.   Even though the demonstrate portion of this badge is a little tricky at this time we got done all that we could.  For the time being at least.   During the month of May we will be putting on a few other merit badges and the May schedule should be ready and running by the 1st.  More now than ever please check the website at least once or twice a week for updates to the calendar.

Monday meeting 4 - 27
We will start off on the Webex site and breakout from there.
First years will be working on:
3a. Explain the patrol method. Describe the types of patrols that are used in your troop.

3b. Become familiar with your patrol name, emblem, flag, and yell.
Explain how these items create patrol spirit.

Good evening everyone

Hi everybody!  Now that you are back from a week off it's time to get back down to the nitty gritty of springtime scouting.
We have a bunch of things on the roster and even more coming up as we go further into the better weather.  We are still trying to put together a trailer clean up day.  Hopefully next weekend will be dryer over at the park and we can get a few hours in.  I'm going to be blaming Mother Nature on any inability to work on the trailer over the past few weeks.  Simply because nature can't point a finger back and is an easy scapegoat.

Here now are the top stories of the week.

S.M.S. for 4 - 5

Good evening everyone

Tonight's letter will be fairly short  But there are 2 things that I wanted to touch on.

New meetings with a twist
This Monday we are going to be holding our first digital meeting at 7pm on our new Discord channel.  The voice service Discord is an application best known by online gamers and streamers.  Best of all (especially for us) it's free.  Anthony D has been working hard on setting the troop up with a server and I think it could make a huge difference In giving us our Monday meetings back.

This simple solution to a very complex problem may be just what we needed for the time being.  It gives the boys the ability to try and continue with scouting even while real life goes against our original ideas for the year.   Discord has a desktop and mobile friendly version. Download the app and sign up. You will need a microphone or you can use the text option to join in. You can contact Anthony or myself and we will invite you in to the group.

What's up with the scoop?

Some of you who have been receiving the troop scoop may be wondering why I haven't sent out this month's new issue. I am having a massive writer's block and have no idea what to talk about (first time for everything). Usually we talk about the upcoming events and the exciting new things coming down the pipeline.  At this time with everything being in lock down it's taking me an extra amount of time to put together something interesting. If you have any suggestions or would like to make a submission send me your Ideas and we'll see what we can do.  It can be something topical, allegorical, comical, or just flat out bonkers.

Good Evening Everyone

Yet another week has passed and the lockdown is still in place.  Spring time has finally come and even though it started with a bit of a chill warmer days are on the way.   There's been a lot of developments over the past couple days that you need to know and we as a troop need to be able to discuss.  The 2nd Monday of the month is tomorrow which means our Patrol Leader Council (P.L.C) and Committee Meeting (C.M) will be taking place this Monday evening.  There are a boat load of things that we need to get into so let's get to it.

Good Evening Everyone

With this past weekend's nonstop rain I'm now fairly happy that I still have troop ones canoes in my backyard.  Rather than using the car to go places this past weekend I could have just rowed my self there.   For this week's message I'll step right into it and start off right at the beginning.  That seems always a really good place to start.

S.M.S. for 5 - 24

Good evening everyone

With the state of Illinois opening up again at the end of the month we have the ability to resume in person meetings.  Good Templar Park has been Troop Ones' summer home for more than a decade. With the good weather upon us and since people having been cooped up inside for a while our next few months should be a breath of fresh air doing fun things together enjoying a nice warm breeze.

Good news about the virus
A bit of good news from the CDC
On Wednesday (the 20th) the CDC released An updated report that concluded that the virus does not spread easily on surfaces.   New findings show that the primary way of transmission is person to person contact and not surface to person.  That means if we're camping the chances of you contracting the virus just because you have touched something somebody else may have  touched is diminished.

**From the CDC website**
"The primary and most important mode of transmission for COVID-19 is through close contact from person-to-person. Based on data from lab studies on COVID-19 and what we know about similar respiratory diseases, it may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this isn’t thought to be the main way the virus spreads."

Live Meetings Return

On Monday June 1st we are starting up IN PERSON meetings again.  It will be a special 2 hour meeting at Good Templar Park from 6 o'clock to 8 o'clock there will be a lot to talk about and do.  There are 3 major topics to cover.

Because tomorrow is May the 4th we will be doing a little something different than the usual for Star Wars day.  We'll be looking at a few videos about Star Wars science.   Because we are all still stuck inside why not watch a few videos of the most iconic sci-fi movie ever.  The first half will be the science behind the lightsaber and can a lightsaber actually be made.  The second half will be on other Star Wars things.  So this week forget the books and pick up your nerd hat for some Star Wars related goodness.

Most of them will be by Because Science with Kyle Hill.

Why this? Why not

This was an idea given to me by the boys and who am I to say no to them on Star Wars day.
