S.M.S. for 3-17-24

Posted by swolfgram on Mar 18 2024 - 1:49am
Good Evening Everyone!

I would first like to thank everyone that came out for Bradly's eagle project on Saturday. We had a FANTASTIC turn out and we removed over 20,000 pounds of junk from the trailers that he was working on. Any regular project is a big undertaking. Bradly's project was an even bigger one. The second work day will be on April 6th at 10am so please put it on your calendar now to save the date.

What happened today? We got 3 new scouts today and another 2 turning in the paper work on Monday.
With five in total I would say that that's a good week.

What's coming up this week?

This Monday Night:

Troop Meeting
St. Marks church, 101 s 6th ave
MAr 18th, 7:00 - 8:15p
This week we will be discussing the upcoming camp-out and or the day outing. I foolishly placed the camp-out right at the beginning of spring break week not realizing this until the last moment. I know a few of the boys will be out of town. We will figure out who's coming and what we are able to do after we get the report back from the boys.

Spring 2024 Mulch fundraiser
Sales are open!
Back this year by popular demand is our mulch spring fundraiser.  Attached is this year's flyer and the sale numbers are all the same. Try to reach out to as many people as you can and the adults should try to do the same. This is a fantastic way to make some money for this year's camping and activities schedule. You can also negotiate with the customer to hire you to spread the mulch for them. All profit goes to the scout and goes to their scout account.  Whenever you place an order or get a sale please let us know as we want to get the mulch you the customer in a timely manner. Make sure you use the troop email when doing so. We have some web only products for sale so check the links on our site.

March Camp-out
This March we will be camping at Johnson's mound forest preserve on Mar 22nd - 24th. We have the cabin this year so weather is not a factor.
The preserve's address is 41 W 600 Hughes rd Elburn IL, 60119
We need to see how many people are going to be around for the camp-out. This is right at the beginning of spring break and we may have a good number of people out of town for the week. If that is the case then we can do a day trip or overnight.
Please let us know if you will be around that weekend.

Hike along the beach and swim in the Atlantic Ocean. Venture to Savannah, one of the oldest cities in the country. See where the United States Marines train. All this and more in this year's summer southern excursion!  As of right now we are working out some scout deals and seeing how low we can go on price. As of now the projected price will be $350.00 per person. That will include the travel cost, the food and the activities.

Recruiting New Members
If you have a family member, a friend, an acquaintance, a Cub Scout, or someone wishing to join you as a transfer from another troop please let us know.  We all know that the only way for the troop to survive is for more people to join over the long run. S.M.S. for 4 - 17 - 22

Posted by swolfgram on Apr 17 2022 - 9:25pm
Good evening everyone

I hope you all had a happy Easter and got to spend some time with family and friends.  This week is also Passover week and Orthodox Easter is next Sunday.  Take some time this April and spend some time with the people you care about the most and forget about the outside world for just a short amount of time.

But don't forget about scouts!

We've a lot coming at us in the next few weeks and it all starts this Monday night at St. Marks.

Monday meeting 4 - 18 - 22, 7p
St.Marks Church Gym.
We were going to hold our Order of the Arrow elections and camp-out planning this Monday meeting.  I just received a letter letting me know that the lodge does not have enough election officials to do the troops' elections.  We will be postponing our OA elections until May.  As soon as I get a date back from the lodge I will let everyone know.  We have 4 scouts eligible to join the OA but they can only do so if you vote them in.  We must have 75% of the troop at this upcoming meeting for the election to count.  The four scouts are Joseph Chieco, Anthony Herrera, Porter Snopko and Bradly Votaw.  As soon as we can get the election in our calendar please put it on yours.

Because the election will be moved we will be working on the details for the Galena trip next weekend.  We will also be finishing up on requirements for our upcoming court of honor on Monday the 25th.
Next weekend is shaping up to be a lot of fun.  We have not been to Galena since 2019.  This will be a productive weekend for all that come.

S.M.S. for 4 - 20

Posted by swolfgram on Apr 19 2020 - 9:41pm
Good evening everyone

For this weekend letter there are a few things I wanted to send out and an idea I wanted to float.   Firstly I want to think Patrick and Mitchell for turning me on to Webex meeting site. I had completely forgotten about them and after putting myself to a crash course on how to put a meeting together it turns out that Webex is nifty.   Going forward using Webex to do major badges and Classwork will be an asset.

S.M.S. for 4 - 26

Posted by swolfgram on Apr 26 2020 - 9:15pm

Good evening everyone

I want to think everyone who  participated in the Lincolns Pilgrimage this past weekend. We had fantastic weather, wonderful food and amazing company. The museums and historical locations we were able to go to gave the boys a much needed dose of history and insight.....
Or at least all this would have happened in an alternate timeline.

In our version of reality it was cool, rainy, and gloomy.  There was one little ray of light this past weekend. Seven scouts who needed the 1st aid merit badge where able to participate in our online presentation of the badge.   Even though the demonstrate portion of this badge is a little tricky at this time we got done all that we could.  For the time being at least.   During the month of May we will be putting on a few other merit badges and the May schedule should be ready and running by the 1st.  More now than ever please check the website at least once or twice a week for updates to the calendar.

Monday meeting 4 - 27
We will start off on the Webex site and breakout from there.
First years will be working on:
3a. Explain the patrol method. Describe the types of patrols that are used in your troop.

3b. Become familiar with your patrol name, emblem, flag, and yell.
Explain how these items create patrol spirit.

Good evening everyone

Hi everybody!  Now that you are back from a week off it's time to get back down to the nitty gritty of springtime scouting.
We have a bunch of things on the roster and even more coming up as we go further into the better weather.  We are still trying to put together a trailer clean up day.  Hopefully next weekend will be dryer over at the park and we can get a few hours in.  I'm going to be blaming Mother Nature on any inability to work on the trailer over the past few weeks.  Simply because nature can't point a finger back and is an easy scapegoat.

Here now are the top stories of the week.

Monday meeting 4 - 3 - 22

S.M.S. for 4 - 5

Posted by swolfgram on Apr 5 2020 - 10:03pm

Good evening everyone

Tonight's letter will be fairly short  But there are 2 things that I wanted to touch on.

New meetings with a twist
This Monday we are going to be holding our first digital meeting at 7pm on our new Discord channel.  The voice service Discord is an application best known by online gamers and streamers.  Best of all (especially for us) it's free.  Anthony D has been working hard on setting the troop up with a server and I think it could make a huge difference In giving us our Monday meetings back.

This simple solution to a very complex problem may be just what we needed for the time being.  It gives the boys the ability to try and continue with scouting even while real life goes against our original ideas for the year.   Discord has a desktop and mobile friendly version. Download the app and sign up. You will need a microphone or you can use the text option to join in. You can contact Anthony or myself and we will invite you in to the group.

Stevan = Stevan W#3810

What's up with the scoop?

Some of you who have been receiving the troop scoop may be wondering why I haven't sent out this month's new issue. I am having a massive writer's block and have no idea what to talk about (first time for everything). Usually we talk about the upcoming events and the exciting new things coming down the pipeline.  At this time with everything being in lock down it's taking me an extra amount of time to put together something interesting. If you have any suggestions or would like to make a submission send me your Ideas and we'll see what we can do.  It can be something topical, allegorical, comical, or just flat out bonkers.

Good Evening Everyone

Yet another week has passed and the lockdown is still in place.  Spring time has finally come and even though it started with a bit of a chill warmer days are on the way.   There's been a lot of developments over the past couple days that you need to know and we as a troop need to be able to discuss.  The 2nd Monday of the month is tomorrow which means our Patrol Leader Council (P.L.C) and Committee Meeting (C.M) will be taking place this Monday evening.  There are a boat load of things that we need to get into so let's get to it.

S.M.S. for 5 - 17

Good Evening Everyone

With this past weekend's nonstop rain I'm now fairly happy that I still have troop ones canoes in my backyard.  Rather than using the car to go places this past weekend I could have just rowed my self there.   For this week's message I'll step right into it and start off right at the beginning.  That seems always a really good place to start.
